Our Services
- Restorative treatments – including fillings, crowns, and bridges.
- Implant therapy – We restore dental implants in conjunction with an Oral Surgeon or Periodontist. We obtain our best results when we are able to work with the specialist before the implant is placed.
- Esthetic dentistry – including cosmetic bondings, veneers, and in-office and at-home bleaching.
- TMJ therapy – including diagnosis, preparation of Brux Guards, and preparation of splints.
- Preventative care – including cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, and oral hygiene instruction.
- Periodontal care – including scaling and root planning.
- Root canal therapy
- Family dentistry on children 3 years and up.
Insurance Policy: We are able to work with and file most insurance policies. We are NOT in-network with any insurance company. Usually this means that the policy will reimburse us at the rate they would an in- network dentist, but there may be a little more of a copay. We believe this policy allows us the freedom to choose the best treatments and materials to treat your case the way it should be treated. Please feel free to call our office with any particular insurance questions or concerns.

About Us
The Elder Dental Group was originally founded in 1946 by Dr. Robert Byrd Moore. Dr. Herman Elder purchased the practice in 1977 and moved it to its current location on Prince Avenue in 1986. Dr. Matthew Elder joined the practice in 1996 after his graduation from dental school. The practice merged with the practice of Dr. Alan Hixon in 2008 after Dr. Hixon’s retirement.
Dr. Matthew Elder, DMD
Dr. Matthew Elder grew up in Athens. He graduated high school from Athens Academy and obtained a B.A. degree in Humanities from Florida State University. He then attended the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry and graduated in 1996 with a D.M.D. degree. “Dr. Matt” is married to his college sweetheart, Susan, and has two daughters, Emily and Catie. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, camping, sailing, fishing, and spending time with his family.
Dr. Herman Elder, DMD
Dr. Herman Elder was born and raised in Cornelia, Georgia and graduated from Habersham Central High School. He then went on to obtain a degree in Chemistry from Piedmont College before entering the first class in the new dental school at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. He graduated in 1973 with a D.M.D. degree. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Nancy, and has two children and four granddaughters. He enjoys spending his free time on the golf course or on Lake Hartwell.
